SOLAR WATER HEATING PRODUCTS
WHICH TYPE OF SOLAR GEYSER SHOULD I INSTALL? FLAT PLATE OR EVACUATED TUBES?

Evacuated Tubes are more productive than flat plates (about 20%). It also requires less maintenance. Evacuated tube systems also outperform the flat plate systems on any roof (even if it is not north facing). However, a flat plat’s performance will be perfect on a north-facing roof and it is visually more attractive. On the other hand, it requires yearly maintenance.

We propose to use evacuate tubes when the elevation of your roof is 45˚ or more off-north to the west or the east.

WHAT IF MY ROOF IS NOT NORTH FACING?
If you do not have a north facing roof, we propose to install the evacuated tube system on your roof (west or east). We assess the roof and roof space when doing the site visit and would propose a bigger size collector. For instance: normally you would need a 20 tube system with a 200L solar water geyser. If your roof faces west or east, and depending on the exact direction, we shall propose a 24 tube system to increase productivity and performance on your system.
WHAT IF I ALREADY HAVE AN ELECTRIC GEYSER?
If you have an existing electric geyser in a perfect working condition and you want to keep it, we convert your existing geyser to a solar water geyser. We call it a retrofit system. You will not lose your guarantee on your existing geyser.
HOW HOT IS THE WATER IN THE SOLAR GEYSER?
The water in your solar geyser would be heated to boiling point. However, all geysers are supplied with a safety valve which opens as soon as your geyser is heated to 80˚C to allow pressure to release.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO RECOVER MY SOLAR ENERGY INVESTMENT?
An average household experiences full recovery of their solar energy investment within a period of 20 – 30 months (depending on your electricity consumption). You would enjoy considerable savings in electricity costs over the lifetime of your solar energy investment. The savings will blow your mind. You will also be a contributor to a greener and sustainable future.
DOES ESKOM STILL OFFER REBATES FOR SOLAR GEYSERS OR GEYSER CONVERSIONS?
Eskom offered rebates for systems installed until the end of January 2015. Subsequently, the Department of Energy/Eskom extended the offer until the end of April 2015. The whole industry awaits further communication. Since the programme’s termination at the end of April 2015, nothing was introduced as yet. We shall keep you informed and post it on our website as soon as it is introduced. At this stage, it is not likely.
DO I HAVE HOT WATER IF THERE IS MINIMAL OR NO SUNLIGHT?
Yes, absolutely. When the solar energy requirement to heat your water is not met due to lack of solar energy, seasonal change or any other reason, your solar geyser would automatically shift to electrical heating and your hot water would continue seamlessly. We set your timer to check your water temperature. The electrical element will be your back-up.
HOW DO I ASSURE THAT A GOOD QUALITY SYSTEM IS INSTALLED AT MY HOUSE?

Make sure the company you use is a reliable, registered company. The solar industry has a lot of “bakkie installers” who will not necessarily be in the industry in a few months time.

 • Company must be a member of SESSA
 • Look at the guarantees
 • Make sure the product has the SABS mark
 • Make sure the installation will be done according to SANS regulations

Make sure you get a COC on your electrical installation
 • Do not compromise on quality – it is an investment! You are not going to look for a “cheap” vehicle or house. The same with your renewable energy.
IS A SOLAR GEYSER A POTENTIAL FIRE HAZARD?

Not at all. Our solar geyser components are correctly temperature rated and non-flammable even in extreme heat. The majority of our geyser components are manufactured from stainless steel, aluminium and glass.

HOW MUCH TIME IS REQUIRED FOR A SOLAR WATER GEYSER INSTALLATION?

This varies according to the logistics of each site, generally 6-8 hours.

WHAT MUST BE THE SIZE OF MY SOLAR GEYSER?

This depends on the type and capacity of the geyser. The appropriate geyser for your requirements is a function of the number of bathrooms and persons residing in the home. We would advise you on the most appropriate size solar geyser for your specific requirements and needs. Normally a 150L geyser would be sufficient for 2 – 3 people. In case of more than 4 regular residents, we recommend that you upgrade to a 200L or 2 x 150L geysers (especially if some of the people are not regular residents). Please speak to one of our consultants to find out what would suit you best.

Normally the calculation is 50L per person residing in the home.

IS MY EXISTING GEYSERWISE CONTROLLER COMPATIBLE FOR MY SOLAR GEYSER?

If it is a Geyserwise Max, it is compatible. However, a normal Geyserwise controller is unfortunately not compatible. We shall include a Geyserwise Max in our Solar Geyser installation.

HOW WOULD GEYSERWISE MAX HELP YOU MANAGING YOUR WATER TEMPERATURE?

These control devices assist the homeowner in proactively managing the operational times of their geyser. You could, for example, program the on and off times of the electricity of your geyser. In addition, these devices also clearly indicate the temperature of the water in your geyser and the panel at any time, which is very useful.

HOW MUCH WEIGTH PER SQUARE METRE CAN MY ROOF TAKE?

According to regulations, your roof can take 80kg/m².
