ICON™ Home Energy Hub

Icon Logo

The inverter is a critical component in any solar PV system. It converts DC power generated from the PV panel array into usable AC power that powers home appliances. Modern hybrid inverters also manage the flow of energy within your system, controlling when batteries are to be charged or discharged.

The ICON Home Energy Hub is an inverter with added intelligence, designed specifically for South African homes. It integrates seamlessly with Lithium Ion batteries and various other devices. In addition, the ICON mobile app enables you to monitor your systems performance wherever you are.

How the technology works

A solar inverters main job is to take the electricity generated from the solar panels and convert it into a form that can be utilized in your home. This process involves at least 3 separate functions. The first is to track how the energy from your panels varies (as the sunshine varies) and constantly make adjustments to ensure that the maximum possible power is generated. The second is to convert the DC electric ity into AC electricity. The third function is to synchronize that AC electricity with the current being supplied by the grid so that it can seamlessly supplement or replace the grid power. There are several types of inverters available. The most common, often called grid tied inverters, are limited to the steps above. Another type, called hybrid inverters, because they are designed to manage different energy sources, are able to integrate with batteries to store or draw extra power as required .

The Icon Solution

The choice of inverter is one of the most important decisions in the design of a home PV system. Unfortunately the market is complicated, with many competing products and relatively few established guidelines and standards. The ICON is manufactured specifically for the South African market to the highest quality standards, and backed by a 5 year guarantee. This battery-ready inverter offers homeowners the maximum flexibility at a fair price.

ICON™ Home Energy Hub

ICON™ Home Energy Hub boasts many features including a mobile app. The ICON hub communicates directly to our simple mobile app through the GSM network, enabling you to monitor your system on your phone. You can track how much energy the system is generating and how full the battery is. The app can even estimate the amount of kWh being saved and translate this into Rands, using local tariffs. It is downloadable on IOS and Android.

FAQ

What is the difference between a grid-tie and hybrid inverter?

Grid-tie inverte rs are connected to the incoming power supply to you r home. The electricity ge nerated by the PV system supplemen ts the power from the grid and extra energy is fed back into the grid. Hybrid inve rters are designed to work with batte ries to store excess power rathe r than exporting to the grid. This type of system solves issues of renewa ble energy variabil ity and unreliable grid structures, wh ich makes it ideal for the South African market.

Why couldnt I get a larger inverter?

Many municipalities are adopting the NRS097 regulations that limit the size of the system that a homeowner may install. It limits you to a system that is only 25% of the size of your incoming supply from the municipality. In the majority of homes this limits the system size to 3.5kW which is how the icon is sized.
