THE BASICS OF PHOTO VOLTAICS
  • Solar Panels: The solar panels are made up of photovoltaic (PV) cells, which convert sunlight into direct current (DC) electricity throughout the day.
  • Inverter: This device converts the DC electricity generated by the solar panels into the alternating current (AC) electricity.

We use Hybrid inverters (smart inverters) which include the charge controller, MPPT, and all ports for grids, generator and battery connections. This is an all in one inverter and most attractive to our customers.

  • DB Board: The AC electricity is sent from the inverter to your DB Board to power your lights and appliances with solar energy.
WHY IS SWITCHING TO A SOLAR POWER IS INEVITABLE?

Solar energy can be used for all your general electricity requirements. We supply Photo Voltaics (solar modules) for the production of solar power to replace your domestic electricity supply, liberating you from the stranglehold of traditional electricity consumption and future electricity increases

Regain control of your energy costs with a PV system that produces clean, renewable energy and take a huge step towards meeting your sustainable goals.

Winelands Solar are very careful about which projects to accept and lean to rather under-promise and over-deliver.

WHY SWITCHING TO A SOLAR POWER IN SOUTH AFRICA?

The South African electricity grid remains unstable and continues to take strain, translating into inconsistent electricity supply for domestic use. Solar technology offers renewable energy that can be utilised for your entire domestic electricity requirement, from solar water heating to solar electricity for various appliances.

By using solar energy solutions, your dependency on Eskom is reduced or even eliminated, environmentally positive outcomes are attained. Real value is added to your home through a sustainable solar energy solution that enhances the attractiveness of your property in the mind of a prospective buyer.

Currently, Eskom’s peak capacity available is extremely tight with limited reserves to fall back on. Renewable energy generation is becoming increasingly important in the overall energy mix, contributing towards energy sustainability and security. It becomes more and more important to be independent from grid failures or power outages. Apart from inconvenience, your security system is linked to your electricity availability.

Electricity has been the heart of most economic and life-quality improvement during the last century. No energy source can compare with the free and clean energy potential of the African sun. Mother Earth receives more energy from the sun than what we can use at any particular time. Solar Energy capitalise on the fact that the sun is rising every day to generate heat or electricity.

THE POTENTIAL BENEFITS OF SWITCHING TO SOLAR

Depending on what the purpose of your decision is for going Solar, your benefits are going to be huge and not necessarily in Rand value. Although saving money is the primary motive behind energy efficiency, improving ones carbon footprint is also a significant benefit.

  • Regain control of your energy costs with a PV system that produces clean solar power
  • Decrease your dependency on Eskom
  • Be more independent. Eskom cannot cut off your security system at your home or business. You are in control.

  • Start with a small system and built on it as your budget allows for it.       The important thing is to make sure that you partner with a professional solar company.
  • Solar Energy converts your monthly electricity bill into an asset on your roof and your return on investment will outperform any other investment.       According to experts, a PV system is the best tax free investment any home owner can make.
  • Your financial benefit starts with your conversion or installation of a solar water geyser. You can cut your electricity bill with 30 – 40% (depending on your hot water usage)
  • Solar panels are one of the top options to keep our climate liveable for years to come<
  • A well designed solar system can pay itself off from 5 years.
  • You are a responsible individual with a sense of accountability and help reducing carbon emission

INCREASE THE VALUE OF YOUR HOME/BUSINESS

While the upfront cost of the PV system may be a deterrent, solar energy can be a worthwhile investment for a homebuyer/business looking for a return on investment down the road.

Various studies have shown that homes with green features tend to sell faster and for more money. Investors reckon that solar is the best tax-free investment a home-owner can make.

A PV system is a huge investment and the value to your home or business is significant.

Do not compromise on quality when making your decision. You need to make sure that you partner with a Solar Company who insists on value but do not compromise on quality.

Start with switching to a Solar water Geyser. When shopping for a solar geyser, make sure you talk to suppliers who know the pros and cons of the specific brand, model and type. Some imported solar geysers may seem cheaper, until there is a malfunction and you have nowhere to send it back to. Rather invest in a well-known and trusted brand and use a registered company (and make sure the company is a member of Sessa). The same applies to a PV system. Spreak to a professional solar company such as Winelands Solar.

  • Our PV modules come with a 20 year warranty on their rated power output and they require virtually no maintenance during that time, except for cleaning once in a while.
  • A Solar Water Geyser secures your independence from Eskom and fixes your electricity bill for decades to come.
  • Using the free energy potential of the African sun is smart and a very clever choice.

COMPLIANCE WITH BUILDING REGULATIONS AND FUTURE TAXES

Carbon emissions are being taxed all around the world, and are also being introduced in South Africa now. We can already see this with the purchases of new cars. High electricity consumers will be heavily taxed in the future, all the more reason for our clients to make the smart choice now. The sliding scale on which higher consumption is charged, has a negative impact on costs.

Currently businesses can already benefit from tax returns on energy efficiency projects implemented at their facilities, and energy consultants can assist our clients to see if they qualify.

New building regulations are enforcing energy efficiency on all new buildings, and clients are forced to have energy efficiency confirmation included into their new building plans. We can assist them to comply, and to benefit from quality products, cost effective financing our projects and leading energy experts which they can trust to have their best interest at heart.

UNDERSTANDING THE SOLAR ENERGY (PV) OPTIONS

Investing in a Photo Voltaic (PV) solar system is a substantial investment to your home or business and requires an in-depth analysis of your options and what you actually want to obtain.

At this stage in South Africa’s renewable energy journey, various factors have to be taken into account which does not make the decision easier.

Each municipality in SA handles the connection to the grid differently and it changes regularly. Some municipalities require written permission. However, the major and continue increases in electricity supports the idea of installing a PV system on your roof to be more independent.

GRID TIED PHOTO VOLTAIC (PV) SYSTEM

This system is used to be a supplement to your energy system. In case of load shedding or a black out, your PV system (by international standard requirements) are forced to shut down as well.

Thus, no energy can be produced by your PV system during power outages. This is a safety precaution to prevent people from electrifying whilst working on power lines.

HYBRID PV SYSTEM WITH BATTERY BACKUP

During daytime, the household will use the generated PV power as energy. At the same time, the batteries will be loaded through the PV modules. In the event of a power outage, this system will act as a UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply). The inverter sees the battery bank as a Grid which will act as your power or electricity supply during power outage.

However, you will still be grid connected and if the sun is not shining, the batteries will be your first line of support, and afterwards you will use your Eskom electricity (according to your requirements). Your consumption priorities can be set-up via the software.

Winelands Solar is using a “smart” inverter which means that you only need one inverter for all your needs. It is your inverter, battery charger and regulator, MPPT and you can also have a generator connected as a back-up. The Hybrid PV System will charge the batteries first and use the excess production to supplement the household or business needs.

OFF-GRID PHOTO VOLTAIC SYSTEM

This system is very handy and useful in remote areas with no electricity connection. The energy produced by the solar system will charge the batteries which should allow for a few days’ worth of energy needs, depending on consumption. These batteries will be seen as the “grid” in an off-grid system.

UPS SYSTEM

UPS is not a traditional PV system. UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply) is a back-up system in case of loadshedding or power outage.

There are 2 options: One of which the module charges the batteries and the other option where the electricity charges the batteries.

GREEN ENERGY IN SOUTH AFRICA AND HOW IT AFFECTS US

The energy supply by Eskom in South Africa or the lack of it, affects all of us. Everyone should assess the risk, one’s resources as well as one’s responsibility to a greener environment

Legal requirements and restrictions change regularly. Sessa keeps the renewable sector informed. Read more on Sessa’s website (http://sessa.org.za)

INFORMATION TO ARCHITECTS AND BUILDERS

Despite legislation the building industry sometimes ignore the energy saving requirements for new buildings. Solar water heaters are the biggest savers of electricity and architects and builders should insist on a solar water geyser or at least the preparation for a potential home owner to convert the geyser.

The roof should also make provision to go solar in future if not from the start. Most architects are part of the elite group of responsible individuals and use these rules for years:

  • Enough roof-space facing North for the solar panels of the geysers as well as the solar energy
  • Provision for extra conduits from the Distribution Board to the roof
  • Enough ventilation to make sure that an air conditioner is unnecessary
  • Insulation, LED lights etc.
  • Space in the garage or a room to accommodate inverters/batteries if needed in future
